The Power of Positive Affirmations
When I was 24, I came across a book that was to change my Life! I was on a trip back to Australia (I was living and working in London at the time) and I found it at my brother’s house. My father had left it for my brother to read, but he wasn’t all that interested, so I decided to read it.
The book was called ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ by Louise Hay. It was the most amazing book I had ever read and I couldn’t put it down. In the book Louise Hay explained from her own experiences, how she had come to learn of a formula that could change her life. She had a very hard upbringing and the formula had helped her move from a place of sadness and despair, to one of amazing joy, love and happiness.
Louise Hay’s book showed me that for every negative thought I had, there was a corresponding positive thought. All I had to do was recognize the negative thought when it came into my mind and change it to a more positive one. The key to this simple formula was that when you changed the thought to a positive one, it had to be in the present tense.
For example: Negative: Today is going (past tense) to be a bad day. Positive Thought: Today is (present tense) a good day. Louise Hay stressed that it had to be in the present tense because she said “The Point of Power is Always in the Present Moment”. I didn’t fully understand that statement for another 20 years, but back then I was willing to give it a try.
It seemed so simple. Search for the negative thought and replace it with the positive thought.
So I began to put Louise Hay’s teachings to the test. I was a diligent student. Every day I would analyze where my thinking was negative and replace it with the positive. Every time the negative thought returned I would affirm the positive.
Louise had said that once you changed your thinking from the negative to the positive that the circumstances in your life would begin to change too. She was right! Up until that point, there had been a lot going wrong in my life. I was suffering from depression having lost my job, was in debt, was homesick for Australia and didn’t know what to do with my life.
But once I started putting Louise Hay’s formula in to place, it all began to change! I couldn’t believe how it could change so simply and so quickly. I began to see good things start to happen in my life! I met a wonderful man, (whom I eventually married). I found a good job; I met some great friends and did lots of wonderful travel.
I found a great place to live…..
I was learning to sing at the time because back then I thought I wanted to be a singer. I needed to move out of my old place because with all these new things happening, my place of residence was changing. So I set myself and Louise’s book up for a challenge. After all the amazing things that had happen, self-doubt started to creep in that it could all be that simple and could happen so quickly.
I could not afford to buy a piano at the time (to practice my singing), so I decided that the only way to get one was to affirm that the next house I moved into would have a piano in it.
After seeing success on the other things, I thought why not!
So I began to search for the house with the piano in it. I tried many places and I nearly moved into one house but something told me it wasn’t the right place. I began to doubt my ability to create what I wanted; ignoring all of the other things I had already received! I began to think all the positive affirmation stuff was a load of rubbish and I was just about to give up when I rang a woman about a room share. The woman sounded really nice on the phone and I had a feeling I would like this lady when I met her.
I went to the house and was greeted by two lovely women whom were to become lifelong friends. We chatted in the kitchen for some time and then one of the women said, ‘would you like to see your bedroom?
As I walked into the bedroom I couldn’t believe my eyes!
There standing on one wall was a piano!!
Negative Experiences
But of course, I wasn’t content with that amazing incident!!
Looking back over those years and having the wisdom and insight I have now, I think the main reason I didn’t continue to maintain Louise’s formula, was that I didn’t know what to do with my life. I had many wonderful things in my life, but I hadn’t found My Life’s Purpose. So I continued to search…..
My wonderful man and I moved back to Australia, we found jobs (not one’s we were happy with), we got married, we bought a beautiful house, we had our first child, but we were not content with all of that. Most people would be! We yearned for the adventure and excitement we’d had travelling through Europe and mixing with all the different cultures.
So we decided to find work in Singapore and live there. Why Singapore? Because it was a half way point between London and Australia. We didn’t want to go back to London as the pace was fast, we were burnt out from working there and we didn’t like the weather! It took us 6 years in London and 5 years in Melbourne to realize we’d had enough of the cold and wanted to live someplace warm. After all, we had both originally grown up in warm sunny Queensland. The other main reason was that we had just had our first child and we felt bad about taking her away from the grandparents. So our thinking was that a plane trip back to Australia, 7 hours from Singapore was much better than 18 hours from London. So Singapore it was!
We had both planned to work in Singapore and we were determined not to let our new baby change our life. Yeah right!!
I’d have to say some of the earlier years living in Singapore were the hardest we ever encountered. It was the year 2000. Our daughter was only two months old and we had no extended family to help us. We were living in a culture completely alien to us and there was a recession on. My husband had a job, but I decided to stay home and look after our beautiful bundle of joy. I couldn’t bear to leave her alone in a new country with people I didn’t really know. Besides I loved spending time with her!
It is funny how in life, when you don’t examine the lessons you need to learn, they keep coming up until you do. The lesson started from the time I stopped using Louise Hay’s formula. I chose to continue to focus on the all the negative things happening in my life instead of the positive. By the time we got to Singapore, my lesson was not a small insignificant one to overcome, but an extremely large meteorite type of one!
I went through a dark period. I had post natal depression, a friend committed suicide and I saw a man jump to his death. My wakeup call had arrived. I began to question life, especially the two people who had taken their lives. What could possibly make a person feel so bad that they decided to check out of this life voluntarily?
Unconsciously I knew negative thoughts had a lot to do with it, but I wasn’t going to gain that insight for a while. I’d started to search for the answers as to why all of these things had happened to me. Negative thoughts seemed to plague my day. It was like a fog that you can’t see through until you come out the other side.
So I began to explore all kinds of ways of finding peace.
Spiritual Awakening
I took up Yoga.
By practicing the physical postures I learnt that it calmed my mind. I began to realize that Yoga was not just a physical activity, but also taught me how to meditate, to be in the present moment! It taught me how to go within and see what was going on inside not only my mind but my body too. It also opened a door to a side that I had not experienced before, the Spiritual.
My Yoga teacher said I would be good at Reiki and that I should try it. I had seen someone practice Reiki in London, but I remember at the time thinking it was quite weird. What could possibly be achieved from a person holding their hands 5 inches away from a person’s body? It seemed odd.
But with an open mind and curiosity, I decided to try it.
I remember my first lesson in Reiki. When I closed my eyes and the teacher put her hands on my shoulders, I saw a beautiful pink, golden light. I also felt an overwhelming sense of love, calm and peace. It felt like I was floating. I discovered that not only could I practice Reiki on myself, but on others too. So I set about trying out my new technique on anyone who was interested.
My friends and family were reluctant participants at first, thinking it was all quite strange, but soon grew to like it because it made them feel calm and peaceful too.
Then I started to notice something quite amazing. Whenever I practiced Reiki on someone, I would see and feel things that I couldn’t explain how I knew them. I would ask a person, ‘Is there something wrong with your kidneys?’ They would be amazed that I knew.
I asked my Reiki teacher to explain why I could see and feel these things about the people I was working on. She told me to just focus on the Reiki energy and not worry about all those other things. But not content to do this, I began to search for answers.
I came across another book. ‘The Light Worker’s Way’ by Dr Doreen Virtue. Like Louise Hay’s book, I couldn’t put this one down either. It told me about people in this world who are called Light Workers. They are incredibly psychic. They can hear, see, feel and know things about people beyond the everyday stuff that you learn. I had an inkling I was like this, so I started to explore some more.
I went to Dr Virtue’s Angel Intuitive course. There I discovered that I could see people’s auras, read people’s pasts and futures, speak to Angels and ultimately talk to God/the Universe. My spiritual reality had kicked in. I felt like I had come home. I finally knew my purpose in life, to be an Intuitive Healer.
But of course I didn’t accept that purpose at first and for quite a while! Most people just want to be a doctor or a lawyer, so Intuitive Healer certainly wasn’t something I had planned on doing! It took me a long time to accept my ability and there was many a day where I thought I was going crazy and that the world would think I was a freak. I thought I would get into trouble for seeing and feeling these things about people. So I kept rejecting it.
Then I came across Thetahealing®. Another lady who I knew from the Angel Intuitive course, was teaching this healing technique. Intuitively I was drawn to it. It was started by a lady called Vianna Stibal, who healed herself instantly of cancer of the leg. I remember thinking at the time, how could that possibly be? How could anyone heal themselves and instantly? It was ridiculous to even think about it. But intuitively I knew I had to learn it.
I learnt so many things from Thetahealing®. I learnt that I could go into a deep meditative state in a matter of minutes and access the Theta brain wave. This is the same meditative state that transcendental yogis go into.
I learnt that changing a thought from a negative to a positive happened a lot faster in this meditative state. Once you started clearing the negative thoughts, your mind became clearer. The miraculous thing was that when you did this it also opened up your connection to God/the Universe. I learnt that your negative thoughts get in the way of connecting to the Divine and once you start to get rid of these you begin witness some amazing miracles!
Finally I began to believe and I came to accept all the things I had learnt along the way. With all that I have learnt so far, my journey continues. I also know now that I am here to impart what I have learnt to others, so that they can live happy, fulfilled prosperous lives.
We are all here to help one another and if I can play my part in that, then my job is done!
I look forward to helping you.
