Creating a capsule wardrobe is a great way to start building a wardrobe of clothing you love!
But as most of us were never taught these skills, it can be hard to know where to start!
So here are a few tips to help you get the ball rolling.
Assess Your Personal Style, Body Shape, and Other Needs
-
- Before you begin to put together a capsule wardrobe, it’s always a good idea to assess your current personal style, body shape, your daily activities, and the climate you live in. (if you are not sure how to do this, you can enlist the help of a professional or there is plenty of information on the internet these days to guide you.)
Declutter Your Current Wardrobe
-
- Take a look at what you currently wear. If there are clothing items you don’t like or wear, are damaged, or don’t fit your current lifestyle, then sell, or donate them. (sometimes this process can be hard emotionally if you are doing it on your own, so enlist the help of a friend or professional if you can.)
Choose a Color Palette
-
- Select two or three neutral colors (eg. blue, black white, grey, beige) and one or two accent colors (eg. colours you love to wear frequently or colours that suit your skin tone) to build your wardrobe around. This ensures that your pieces can easily mixed and matched.
Identify Wardrobe Essentials
-
- These include basics like the following list. Ensure they match your chosen color palette.
- White Shirt/ T-Shirt
- Striped T-Shirt
- Chambray Shirt
- Singlet top
- Blazer
- Jacket
- Trench Coat
- Jumper
- Cardigan
- Tailored trousers
- Jeans
- Dress
- Skirt
- Sandals
- White Sneakers
- Boots
- A day bag
- An evening bag
- These include basics like the following list. Ensure they match your chosen color palette.
Mix and Match Pieces
-
- Each piece should work well with most others in your wardrobe. This maximizes outfit possibilities.
Consider Seasonal Needs
-
- Adjust your capsule for the seasons. Some pieces may be interchangeable between seasons, but you might need to swap in a few items for colder or warmer weather.
Invest in Quality
-
- Select pieces that are well-made and likely to last. Quality over quantity is the key to a successful capsule wardrobe.
Accessories Matter
-
- Accessories can change the look of an outfit. Include a few versatile items like scarves, belts, hats, and jewelry.
Set a Limit
-
- Decide on the total number of items in your capsule, often ranging from 15 to 25 pieces. Of course, you can add to this number. But it is amazing how many outfit combinations can be created from just a few pieces!
Rotate Your Wardrobe
-
- Every few months, review your capsule and replace items if necessary. This keeps your wardrobe fresh and adaptable. You also don’t get bored with the clothing you are wearing!
Stay Mindful of New Purchases
-
- When shopping, ensure new items complement your existing capsule and align with your style and color palette.
Remember, the key to a capsule wardrobe is versatility and simplicity. It streamlines your morning routine, reduces clutter, and encourages a more sustainable approach to fashion.
