I’m Listening Experiment Continued

It’s been a funny week.  I’ve had to think hard about how my listening experiment has been incorporated into my week. So here’s what I have discovered.

I have been listening (or not listening) a lot to my own ‘inner speak’ and I must say it’s amazing what goes on with that. It still amazes me how many negative messages a person can come up with in their own head even before they have brushed their teeth in the morning!

I have also been reading a book called “You Were Born for This” by Bruce Wilkinson. His book is basically about listening to God and acting on God’s request to pass a message on to someone who may desperately need to know there is a God. It’s a wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be one of God’s messengers. He says that God is always looking for messengers to pass on important information to people. You don’t have to be a specialist person to do this. Anyone can do it. All they need is a willingness to hear God’s message that need’s passing along.

Sometimes we can hear things that other people have said to us and either misinterpret what they have said or not really hear them at all. That happened this week with my son, who got into a fight with an old friend. The friend thought my son had called him something not nice and my son said he hadn’t. So based on that miscommunication they had a fight resulting in my son being hurt. It made me realise just how important listening is and that one simple case of not listening properly can cause a huge conflict.

So that’s it for now. Who knows what next week will bring?!

I’m Listening Experiment

Ok the past few days since starting this experiment I have been listening hard! I have been listening to my kids, my husband, family and friends, acquaintances etc. Needless to say it has been really interesting, difficult and challenging. I never thought listening could be all these things! Maybe I am trying too hard, but that’s my nature. Here’s what I have discovered so far.

It’s hard to listen to what one person is saying in a crowded room full of people and lots of noise. For example when my husband and I were having lunch with a group of people in a corporate box of a sporting event and it’s raining outside.

It’s hard to listen to people when you are trying to focus on doing a task. For example, trying to cook dinner for a group of friends and at the same time trying to focus on listening to them.

It’s hard to listen to people when you are picking more up about them visually and unconsciously. This goes for any type of situation that you are in, but especially when you are meeting someone for the first time.

It’s hard to listen when you are getting into some sort of conflict with a person. For example, my daughter asking me to buy her the latest white iPod. Something she definitely doesn’t need as she already has a perfectly good one now! (the only reason for wanting the new one …. all her friends have a couple of them….Ai Ya!)

It’s hard sometimes to listen to yourself intuitively when you can’t calm those busy thoughts in your head or you are too subjective about the topic. (I know breathe and meditate :-) )

So that’s what I have learnt so far. I am sure I will get insights into all of these things as I continue with this experiment.

One thing I have noticed is, that if you are not listening fully to another person, you are not fully present either!

If anyone has some good tips or advice for how to improve your listening skills in these situations or any situations for that matter, I welcome your input. After all two, three, four …. heads are better than one ;-)

I’m Listening

Since doing my previous 21 day Be Kind To Yourself experiment, I have been pondering what to write next. Two things came into my head. The first was Listening.

I’ll explain the Listening one first. I really enjoyed doing the 21 experiment. So much in fact that I thought I’d like to do another one! Only this time it’s on Listening and for some reason I am going to practice this for 11 days. Maybe it’s because the 11.11.11 is in two days, that it’s prompted me to use this number. Anyway I have been  ‘pre-testing’ this experiment out for the past few days, but I think I’ll officially start on the 11.11.11.

So what do I mean by Listening? Well another blogger BlueGrassNotes (yogaleigh) described it beautifully on her post called ‘Right Speech’.

In essence, right listening involves taking an unconditional, unbiased stance, reflecting back to the speaker what s/he has said to be sure you are understanding and developing a skillful ability to ask nonjudgmental questions that help her/him to move more deeply into the subject. When you succeed the other person will feel fully understood and that helps her/his heart to be more open to you. At its best right listening helps the other person to know her/his own heart and brings greater intimacy and understanding between the two of you.

So I have had a few go’s at this and I must say it’s not easy!! I’ve noticed I will start listening to another person and before I know it I am thinking of ways to solve their problem in my head or I am drifting off and thinking about other things! I realise that it’s made me more aware of the fact that I am not fully present with people all of the time and unconsciously that must make them feel bad. I know it makes me feel bad!

So starting on the 11.11.11, I am going to see how well I can Listen to people for 11 days. I’ll keep you posted on what comes up!

The other thing I have been guided to look at is the Chakras. I have found this great website www.chakraenergy.com. You can do a test to see if your Chakras are all working properly. It also explains what the Chakras are and some ways we can open them more fully.

So I will be talking more about that in future blogs. It was information about the Chakras I received on the plane coming back from Australia, that helped me to focus on them and heal my headache. When your Chakras are functioning properly, they can help to improve all areas of your life.

So stay tuned.

P.S. For all of you that can, do try to do some sort of meditation or have peaceful thoughts on 11.11.11. It’s a very special day. The more people involved the better it will be for all of us and our beautiful planet! It’s said to be the start of The Age of Aquarius!
